Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo procedure for people with pattern baldness, thinning hair, alopecia, receding hairlines, and scarring.   SMP re-creates the appearance of hair follicles using a hyper-realistic, detailed ‘dotting’ method indistinguishable from natural follicles. ‘Follicles’ are tattooed onto the scalp, eliminating the amount of visible skin, and creating the illusion of density.

How does SMP work?

SMP is different to traditional tattooing. The equipment, needles, ink & technique all differ from traditional tattooing methods.  SMP ink is safe and non-toxic. We use carbon-based pigments that are 100% natural. Traditional tattoo inks use titanium, iron, copper (oxides, selenides & sulfides), as well as plastic-based pigments.  SMP needles are incredibly thin and engineered to deposit tiny amounts of ink into the papillary dermis, just below the epidermis (less than 0.5mm), as dots no larger than a natural hair follicle.  Dots are layered to mimic natural growth patterns. Follicles aren’t all one size, they don’t grow from the same angle and don’t form straight lines (as you see in many hair transplants).  This technique is how we create a result indistinguishable from real follicles.

Is SMP permanent?

SMP is a semi-permanent low-maintenance treatment.  With proper care, SMP can last for many years.  SMP can fade over time due to factors such as sun exposure, and a touch-up treatment may be required in around 2-5 years to freshen up your SMP to keep it looking great.  Treatments vary depending on the level hair loss and the look you wish to achieve.
